Contract teacher salaries
The welfare of contract teachers remains a critical issue in the Indonesian education system.

JurnalPost.com Teachers play a vital role in determining the quality of education and shaping human resources. Through the learning process, teachers do not merely impart knowledge; they also help students develop skills, build character, and prepare for the future.

However, these significant responsibilities are not always matched by the welfare received by some contract teachers. Issues regarding inadequate income continue to draw public attention, including in various social media conversations.

On TikTok, for instance, many netizens have criticized the conditions faced by contract teachers through comments ranging from colloquial language and humor to sarcasm. These expressions reveal that the issue of teacher welfare is not just about income levels, but also about how society values the teaching profession.

Interestingly, the word choices used by netizens illustrate how a segment of society perceives the gap between the responsibilities of teachers and the welfare they receive.

Netizen Sarcasm as a Representation of Teacher Welfare

One comment that drew attention came from the TikTok account @lele goyeng, who wrote, “teachers: demanded to do much, paid next to nothing.”

At a glance, the expression sounds like a joke. However, if examined closely, it contains social criticism regarding the imbalance between job responsibilities and teacher income.

The phrase “demanded to do much” describes the immense responsibilities a teacher must carry. Meanwhile, the colloquial comparison used to describe the salary highlights the perception that the pay is far too small compared to the demands of the job.

Another comment was posted by the account @krucil with the short sentence, “honor or horror.”

The wordplay between honor and horror creates a simple yet powerful critique. The word horror is used to describe a situation deemed concerning, particularly regarding the income of contract teachers.

Both comments demonstrate how criticism of social issues can be conveyed through language that is close to everyday life.

The use of humor and wordplay makes the message easier to understand while capturing the attention of social media users. Nevertheless, these comments are individual expressions and cannot be considered representative of the views of the entire public.

Research by Zaelani et al. (2025) on the style of sarcastic language in the TikTok comment section of Anies Rasyid Baswedan’s account discusses the various forms of sarcasm used by netizens to convey criticism and responses to specific issues.

The study shows that the use of language on social media is not always intended to entertain, but can also serve as a means to express judgments on social conditions.

In the context of contract teacher welfare, sarcasm and wordplay have become one way for some social media users to express their concerns.

TikTok, therefore, does not only function as a medium for entertainment but also as a space for discussion regarding issues occurring in society.

However, the surge of comments on social media must still be distinguished from the reality on the ground. Netizen criticism can serve as an entry point to understanding an issue, but comprehensive assessments must be supported by accurate data.

Great Responsibility, Unbalanced Welfare

The teaching profession demands significant responsibility. A teacher is not only tasked with teaching in the classroom but also with preparing learning materials, conducting assessments, guiding students, and helping to shape their character.

All of these tasks require knowledge, skills, patience, and professional commitment.

Unfortunately, appreciation for teachers is sometimes expressed more through words of gratitude and recognition of their service, while issues of welfare do not always receive comparable attention.

Teaching is indeed known as a profession that prioritizes service. However, the value of service should not be used as an excuse to ignore the economic needs of educators.

Like workers in other fields, teachers require a decent income to meet their living needs, support their families, and improve their professional competence.

When income is not commensurate with the workload, issues arise that require serious attention.

Nevertheless, the condition of contract teachers cannot be generalized. Income levels and employment status can vary based on region, educational unit, funding sources, and applicable policies.

Therefore, discussions regarding contract teacher welfare must consider these diverse conditions to avoid overly broad conclusions.

Data on income, employment status, and working conditions are necessary to identify the actual problems faced by educators.

Teacher Welfare is a Shared Responsibility

The issue of contract teacher welfare is not only related to individual interests but also to the sustainability of the Indonesian education system.

Quality education requires competent educators who have opportunities to develop and receive adequate support in carrying out their duties.

Uncertainty in income and employment status can be an additional burden for teachers who must continue to fulfill their professional responsibilities.

Therefore, the government and education stakeholders need to make teacher welfare a key part of policy evaluation.

This attention can be realized through improvements in payroll systems, payment certainty, clarity of employment status, and protection for educators.

Policies must also consider the differing educational conditions in each region. Effective improvement steps require mapping issues based on data, rather than solely based on trending topics.

On the other hand, the public also has a role in building awareness regarding the teaching profession. Criticism via social media can be a form of public participation as long as it is conveyed responsibly and does not ignore facts.

Sarcasm appearing in digital spaces should not stop at being entertainment or fleeting conversation. Public attention needs to be directed toward encouraging more tangible evaluations and improvements.

Valuing Teachers Means Paying Attention to Their Welfare

The expressions “teachers: demanded to do much, paid next to nothing” and “honor or horror” show that simple language can be a means to convey serious social issues.

Behind the use of humor and wordplay lies a critique of the gap between the magnitude of a teacher's responsibilities and the welfare deemed inadequate.

Although these two comments do not represent the entire experience of contract teachers, their existence shows how educational issues can gain attention through digital conversation.

The issue of teacher welfare certainly cannot be solved solely through criticism on social media. Measured policies, support from various parties, and continuous evaluation are required to improve the conditions of educators.

Ultimately, valuing teachers is not enough through words of thanks or the commemoration of education days. True appreciation must also be reflected in attention to decent income, job security, and professional protection.

Because the quality of education cannot be separated from the welfare of the people who carry out the educational process itself.
