Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, JurnalPost.com – The Master of Nursing program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) has carried out an International Partnership Community Service (PkM-KI) program for the Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI) and Indonesian citizen (WNI) community in Malaysia.
The initiative, which focuses on the prevention and management of hypertension and diabetes mellitus, was conducted in two sessions. The first session took place on August 1, 2026, at PCIM Gombak, while the second was held on August 7, 2026, at the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Kuala Lumpur.
This program is part of UMS's contribution to improving health literacy and self-sufficiency among Indonesians living and working abroad.
Through this activity, participants received education on risk factors, early detection, prevention, and the management of chronic diseases, particularly hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The sessions also covered the adoption of healthy diets, physical activity, stress management, and the importance of independent health monitoring.
The material was presented by Prof. Arum Pratiwi, S.Kp., M.Kes., Ph.D., and Dimas Ria Angga Pribadi, S.Kep., Ns., M.Sc., Ph.D., alongside UMS Master of Nursing students who possess clinical experience.

The involvement of students with clinical experience added significant value to the program. Participants not only gained theoretical knowledge but also received guidance and demonstrations of health skills that can be applied in daily life.
During the session at PCIM Gombak on August 1, 2026, the Indonesian community gained an understanding of the risk factors for hypertension and diabetes, early signs and symptoms, preventive measures, and how to manage the diseases if diagnosed.
Participants were also taught the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing stress as part of efforts to maintain overall health.
The PkM-KI series continued on August 7, 2026, at the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. This activity served to expand the reach of health education for the Indonesian community in Malaysia while strengthening UMS's collaboration with Indonesian institutional partners abroad.
In addition to the presentations, participants received training in basic health monitoring skills, such as practicing blood pressure measurement and learning how to read and interpret the results.
Demonstration, simulation, and hands-on practice methods were used to ensure participants are better equipped to monitor their own health and recognize conditions that require further examination by healthcare professionals.
The PkM-KI team also provided various educational materials, including modules, pocketbooks, leaflets, and digital content in Indonesian. These materials were designed with accessible language so they can be reused by participants and the community as a resource for preventing and managing hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

The service program did not focus solely on physical health but also integrated the values of Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan (AIK).
Participants were encouraged to understand that maintaining health is a form of trust, effort, and responsibility toward oneself, making disease prevention an essential part of daily life.
The involvement of UMS Master of Nursing students was a crucial component of the program. Students played a role in the education process, participant mentoring, health skills practice, the development of educational media, and activity evaluation.
The activity also provided students with the opportunity to apply nursing competencies directly within the context of international community service and to interact with the Indonesian community, which has diverse health needs.
Through the implementation of PkM-KI at PCIM Gombak and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the UMS Master of Nursing program hopes to help increase the awareness, knowledge, and ability of Indonesians in Malaysia to maintain their health and prevent non-communicable diseases.
The program is also designed to have a sustainable impact through the utilization of educational media and the strengthening of health community networks among Indonesians in Malaysia.
This activity further reinforces the commitment of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta to building international collaborations, promoting the application of nursing science, and delivering community service programs that provide tangible benefits to Indonesians abroad.
