PANGKEP, JurnalPost.com – Bamboo and oil palm fronds, which may appear simple, can be transformed into various useful craft products. This was demonstrated by inmates at the Pangkep Class IIB Detention Center during a skills workshop held on Wednesday (7/10/2026).
During the session, the inmates produced several craft items, including food covers and traditional 'bosara' covers. They were directly involved in every stage of the process, from preparing the materials and assembling to shaping and finishing the products under the guidance of staff.
Craft activities serve as a productive outlet for inmates during their rehabilitation period. Beyond filling their time with positive engagement, these skills help train precision, creativity, and the ability to produce items with practical value.
Materials like bamboo and palm fronds were chosen because they are relatively easy to obtain and can be fashioned into a wide variety of crafts. The resulting products are not only useful for daily life but also hold potential economic value if developed sustainably.
The Head of Service Sub-section at the Pangkep Class IIB Detention Center, Djufri, stated that the skills training is designed to ensure inmates possess abilities they can utilize once they return to society.
“We direct our skills training so that inmates acquire abilities they can continue to develop. The hope is that these skills will serve as a foundation for opening business opportunities and supporting their independence after they are released,” said Djufri.
According to him, practical skills are a vital part of the rehabilitation process because they provide experience that can be applied in everyday life.
Through these activities, inmates not only learn to create products but also gain an understanding of the entire workflow, from processing raw materials to producing finished, ready-to-use crafts.
The Pangkep Class IIB Detention Center plans to continue expanding its independence training programs by tailoring the skills taught to the potential of the inmates and the available resources.
The program is expected to provide additional preparation for inmates, helping them better adapt and lead productive lives after completing their time in detention.
