Cepu, JurnalPost.com — The demand for skilled labor in the oil and gas sector continues to rise alongside the development of the energy industry, including in the Kalimantan region. Human resource readiness is a critical factor in ensuring that university graduates can meet the competency standards required by oil and gas companies.
To support these needs, the Human Resources Development Center for Oil and Gas (PPSDM Migas) held technical training for students from the Balikpapan Oil and Gas Technology College (STTM Balikpapan) in Cepu, Central Java, from October 12–16, 2026.
The training covered two areas of expertise: Junior Operator-level Production Operations and Level I Instrumentation Technician. The program is also scheduled to be followed by competency certification in their respective fields.
This program is designed to bridge the gap between students' academic knowledge and the technical skills utilized in oil and gas industry operations.
During the training, students received both theoretical instruction and practical experience under the guidance of PPSDM Migas instructors who possess extensive experience in the oil and gas industry.
One of the production operation instructors, M. Ridwan Ansyori, explained that the learning materials were structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of oil and gas production processes, ranging from well operation to the handling of production output.
"The production class materials we provided included Oil and Gas Well Operations, Reservoir Fluid Separation, Crude Oil, Gas and Produced Water Treatment Plant Operations, as well as Oil and Gas Production Storage and Measurement. All theoretical materials were reinforced with hands-on production operation practice sessions," said M. Ridwan Ansyori.
Students Study Oil and Gas Instrumentation Systems
In addition to production operations, students also received training in instrumentation related to the measurement, control, and monitoring of industrial processes.
The materials provided included an introduction to work equipment and measuring tools, reading instrumentation drawings or instrument drawing, sensor and transducer calibration, transmitter calibration, and the operation of controllers and control valves.
Participants were also equipped with computer operation skills as part of the technical requirements for industrial instrumentation systems.
In oil and gas operations, instrumentation plays a vital role in ensuring that production processes run according to established parameters. The ability to perform measurements and calibrations is a key skill required by technical personnel in the field.
Beyond focusing on equipment mastery, the training also incorporated modules on workplace communication and Occupational Health and Safety (K3).
Safety aspects are a critical concern, given that oil and gas industry activities carry operational risks that require disciplined adherence to work procedures.
Competency Certification for Workforce Readiness
The training organized by PPSDM Migas is not only aimed at increasing students' knowledge but also at preparing them for the competency certification process.
This certification serves as a form of recognition of an individual's technical capabilities based on applicable competency standards.
For students, holding a competency certificate can be a significant advantage when entering the workforce, particularly in sectors that require technical personnel with specialized skills.
"Through the implementation of this training and competency certification, PPSDM Migas hopes that STTM Balikpapan graduates will not only possess a strong grasp of theory but also hold an official competency certificate, which serves as a major asset when entering the oil and gas industry workforce," said Ridwan.
Preparing Oil and Gas Human Resources from Kalimantan
Kalimantan is a vital region for the national oil and gas industry. Exploration, production, processing, and energy distribution activities in the area require the support of a workforce that possesses competencies aligned with industry needs.
This situation creates opportunities for technical university graduates, including those from STTM Balikpapan, to develop careers in the energy sector.
However, theoretical mastery gained during college must be balanced with practical experience and an understanding of the operational standards applied in the workplace.
Through training with PPSDM Migas, students are expected to gain a clearer picture of the technical work they will face after completing their education.
Collaboration between competency development institutions and universities is one of the efforts to narrow the gap between graduate capabilities and industry requirements.
With relevant technical training and certification, students are expected to be better prepared to compete in the oil and gas labor market, while simultaneously supporting human resource development in energy-producing regions.
