Surabaya — Back pain is a common complaint in daily life. This issue can be triggered by various simple habits that often go unnoticed, ranging from sitting for too long and maintaining poor posture to lifting heavy objects incorrectly.
These conditions were the focus of a health education event titled “Preventing Back Pain Risks Through Posture Training and Muscle Strengthening” which was held by the Faculty of Medicine at Nahdlatul Ulama University Surabaya (FK UNUSA) in the Wonocolo District, Surabaya.

The event, which took place on September 19, 2026, was attended by 50 health volunteers. Participants gained an understanding of the importance of maintaining proper posture and practiced simple exercises that can be integrated into daily activities.
Dr. Aisyah, Sp.KFR, the keynote speaker, explained that improper body positioning increases the load on muscles and the spine. If these habits persist, the risk of developing back pain increases.
Therefore, maintaining proper body alignment is not only important while working. How one sits, stands, walks, and lifts objects must be considered so that the load on the body is distributed more effectively.
“Poor posture can increase the load on muscles and the spine. Therefore, it is important to get used to good body positioning while sitting, standing, working, or lifting heavy objects.”
In addition to understanding proper posture, participants were encouraged to stay active. Simple physical activity is a crucial part of maintaining muscle function and supporting body stability.

During the practical session, the volunteers were introduced to posture and muscle-strengthening exercises that can be performed for about 5–10 minutes daily. These exercises are designed to be easily applied without special equipment, making them suitable for home or during breaks in daily activities.
The message emphasized to participants was not to fear movement when trying to maintain back health. Instead, the body should be accustomed to being active in a measured way, while respecting individual capabilities and conditions.
Volunteers Expected to Share Education with the Community
The event was interactive. The volunteers did not just listen to the material but also engaged in discussions and practiced simple movements to improve posture and strengthen muscles.
The role of health volunteers is considered vital because they have direct proximity to the community. The knowledge gained during the event is expected to extend beyond the participants to their families and neighbors in their respective areas.
The event was also attended by the Head of Wonocolo District, Muslich Hariadi, S.Sos., M.M., and the Vice Dean III of the UNUSA Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Hafid Algristian, Sp.KJ. In addition to faculty members, several students and research assistants from FK UNUSA were involved in the event's execution.
The involvement of various parties brought together elements of higher education, district government, students, and health volunteers in an educational activity oriented toward practical habits in the community.

Back pain itself can impact a person's comfort while working and performing routine activities. Therefore, prevention efforts can start with habits closest to daily life.
Improving sitting positions, avoiding the same posture for too long, moving regularly, and strengthening muscles are simple steps that can be started immediately.
Through this education, participants are expected to better understand that maintaining back health does not always require complicated exercises. Consistency in improving posture and keeping the body active is a key part of maintaining comfort during daily activities.
With a more active body and better posture, the risk of complaints caused by daily habits can be reduced, helping the community live more comfortably and productively.
