Jombang, JurnalPost.com - The commemoration of National Santri Day 2026 at the Hamalatul Qur’an Putri Islamic Boarding School in Jogoroto, Jombang Regency, took a unique approach. Instead of focusing on ceremonial events, the students chose to observe the day through a collective five-juz muroqobah (memorization review) and a Khatmil Al-Qur’an (completion of the Quran).

The event, held on Thursday (22/10/2026), took place in the boarding school's main hall. For the students, Santri Day is not merely an annual celebration but an opportunity to strengthen their commitment to preserving their Quranic memorization.

The atmosphere in the hall was solemn. The female students, dressed in white uniforms, sat with their copies of the Quran, taking turns reciting verses with deep concentration.

Through the five-juz muroqobah activity, the students strive to maintain the quality of their memorization so that it remains strong and mutqin, meaning memorization that is solid, fluent, and precise.

Santri Day Does Not Require Ceremonies

Event organizer Hilma Aulia explained that Santri Day does not always have to be marked by formal activities. According to her, maintaining the tradition of studying and carrying out daily boarding school routines is also a form of honoring the struggles of past santri.

"Celebrating Santri Day isn't just about ceremonies. We can also celebrate by continuing our daily habits of reciting the Quran and upholding the values of the boarding school. Maintaining these activities is also a form of celebrating Santri Day," Hilma explained.

For Hilma, the activity holds a deeper meaning. Santri Day serves as a reminder of the struggles of the kiai (Islamic scholars) and students in safeguarding religious values, education, and community life.

She believes that this spirit of struggle can be carried forward through simple steps, including maintaining memorization and practicing the teachings of the Quran in daily life.

"Santri Day is very meaningful for remembering the struggles of our heroes, our students, and our kiai. We do this by continuing to guard our memorization and practicing the Quran," she said.

Hilma hopes that the Santri Day commemoration will foster awareness that struggle is not always demonstrated through grand events. According to her, diligence in learning, preserving knowledge, and shaping character are also parts of a student's struggle.

"My hope is that Santri Day serves as a reminder that struggle is not always about noise, but also about the verses we protect, the knowledge we practice, and the character we pass on," she concluded.

Five-Juz Muroqobah Is Already a Habit

The activity received a positive response from the students, including Rahma, a twelfth-grade student at the Hamalatul Qur’an Putri Islamic Boarding School.

Rahma expressed her joy in participating in the five-juz muroqobah as part of the Santri Day series. For her, the activity did not feel burdensome because it is already part of their daily routine at the school.

"I feel happy because here, the five-juz muroqobah is done every day. It is part of our habituation method," Rahma said.

According to Rahma, the habituation system applied at the school helps students maintain their memorization consistently. Recitation, muroqobah, and memorization assessments remain essential parts of their daily lives.

She realizes that the way her school celebrates Santri Day might differ from other boarding schools. However, this difference provides a unique experience because the activities are directly related to their primary role as Quranic memorizers.

"We celebrated Santri Day this year a bit differently from our friends elsewhere. We continued our muroqobah, our recitations, and our assessments, remaining as active as we are on any other day," she revealed.

Rahma also hopes that the momentum of Santri Day can encourage all students to continue improving and completing their Quranic memorization.

"I hope that our memorization becomes more fluent and that our friends find it easier and finish quickly. For those who have already completed it, I hope they remain consistent in their review," she said.

In the tradition of Islamic boarding schools, the term nderes refers to the activity of reading or repeating Quranic memorization regularly so that it is not easily forgotten.

Maintaining the Tradition of Recitation as a Form of Struggle

The Santri Day commemoration at the Hamalatul Qur’an Putri Islamic Boarding School demonstrates that the spirit of the boarding school can be manifested through various activities, including maintaining the tradition of recitation that has become part of daily life.

Through the five-juz muroqobah and the Khatmil Al-Qur’an, the students not only commemorate National Santri Day but also reflect on their responsibility to guard their memorization, deepen their religious knowledge, and practice the values of the Quran.

For the students of Hamalatul Qur’an Putri, the commemoration on 22 October this year serves as a reminder that a student's struggle can continue through diligence in learning, guarding their memorization, and cultivating good character in their daily lives.
